Workshop on Realizing the potential of Data in Software Engineering

Mr. Fakhar Abbas Mehar, the workshop speaker and trainer is working as Data Scientist and BigData Consultant @ IBM Lahore. He is an accomplished and motivated IT professional with around 10 years of distinguished performance in analysis, design, development and deployment of data driven softwares, agile based projects, open source applications and business intelligent and analytic products. He has delivered 100+ projects, developed a number of in-house products and conducted a number of Data Science workshops and trainings. In workshop sessions, he stressed the importance of this field and highlighted that the ability to manipulate and understand data is increasingly critical to discovery and innovation. As a result, we see the emergence of a new field—data science—that focuses on the processes and systems that enable us to extract knowledge or insight from data in various forms and translate it into action.

Dr. Faiza Iqbal, the Workshop Organizer expressed that the purpose of the workshop was to equip the participants with skillsets of Data Science which is the current demand of the industry. The aim is to introduce what exactly is Data Science and why does it matters in the field of Software Engineering. Participants learnt from case studies about how data science is uniquely positioned to solve major problems for a variety of companies. They gained the awareness about the field of data science, and more importantly, identified that how can they help themselves to get what the Harvard Business Review calls the “hottest job of the 21st century”. The hands-on session, provided in the lab, introduced a number of tools required for Data Analytics including RStudio, Python, IBM SPSS, Tableau, Rapid Miner to name a few.

In the closing ceremony, Dr. Ibrar Hussain, Head of Software Engineering Department, remarked that data science has evolved as an interdisciplinary field that integrates approaches from such data-analysis fields as statistics, data mining, and predictive analytics and incorporates advances in scalable computing and data management. He emphasized the participants that we live in a world with seemingly infinite data, and if one can learn the right balance of statistics, software engineering and information theory, there are lucrative opportunities available to you. He invited Mr. Fakhar Abbas to formulate a linkage and cooperation agreement between UOL and IBM in near future.
